Khushi Baby uses wearable NFC (near-field communication) technology and mobile health platforms to create digital health records for mothers and children in rural India, ensuring no child is left unvaccinated and improving maternal-child health outcomes through better data and health worker accountability.
Current technology use
Each mother and child receives a colorful necklace containing an NFC chip that stores their complete health history. Health workers scan the necklace with smartphones during village visits to instantly access vaccination records, pregnancy history, and health status, then update information in real-time. The system tracks immunization coverage, identifies children at risk of dropping out, sends automated reminders, and provides health officials with dashboards showing program performance across entire districts.
Public notes
Khushi Baby partners with state governments in India to integrate their technology into existing public health systems. They equip government-employed ANMs (Auxiliary Nurse Midwives) and ASHAs (community health workers) with smartphones preloaded with their app. During village immunization camps and home visits, health workers scan patients' NFC necklaces to access digital records, record vaccinations and health data, and receive clinical prompts.
The necklaces are distributed free to families during pregnancy registration or a child's first vaccination, designed as culturally appropriate jewelry that mothers want to keep and wear. Data flows to government health information systems and Khushi Baby's cloud platform where AI identifies children overdue for vaccines, enabling targeted outreach. They deploy through district-by-district partnerships with state health departments who manage the health workers while Khushi Baby provides technology, training, and ongoing technical support.
